Bill Shoemaker scored his 999th career stakes victory by riding Charlie’s Notes wire-to-wire in the $44,450 Montclair Handicap on a day held in his honor at Golden Gate Fields in Albany, Calif. It was exactly 40 years ago at Golden Gate that Shoemaker got his first win.
