Prep Softball Roundup : Marina Uses Offense, Defense to Win in 10th

Becky Toler singled in the bottom of the 10th inning to drive home Sandra Ross and give host Marina High School a 1-0 Sunset League softball victory over Fountain Valley Friday at Marina.

Marina starter Willa Parchen allowed two hits in 10 innings, striking out eight and walking four. Fountain Valley’s Rae Rice, who gave up four hits, struck out 12 and walked none. Marina is 12-9 overall and 2-2 in league play. Fountain Valley is 3-1 in the league.

Fountain Valley had had a chance to go ahead with a runner on third and two outs in the top of the 10th. But right fielder Julie Luft fielded Sami Sawyer’s hard-hit line drive after it bounced and threw to first for the putout.

In other Sunset League games:

Edison 1, Ocean View 0--Left-hander Elysia Weiner allowed six hits to lead host Edison (4-13, 2-2). Two of Ocean View’s three errors contributed to the game’s only run in the second inning. Ocean View dropped to 2-2 in league play.

In the Sea View League:

Tustin 5, Estancia 0--Jayme Ondracek earned her sixth victory of the season with a four-hitter for Tustin (11-6, 8-1). Allison Potenza singled in two runs in the fourth inning, when Tustin took a 2-0 lead. Estancia is 0-9 in league play.

Saddleback 6, University 1--Nikkanni Andrews had two hits, including a home run, and three runs scored for the Roadrunners (19-2, 9-0) at University. Desi Abrego (14-2) allowed eight hits and struck out three for the victory.

In the South Coast League:

Irvine 2, Capistrano Valley 0--Jennifer Brundage pitched a one-hitter, striking out eight and walking three. Irvine (12-6, 3-1) scored both its runs in the first inning on singles by Carrie Caudill and Sam Lutsch.

El Toro 3, Dana Hills 0--Paige Lauby pitched a three-hitter and drove in two runs with a single in the first inning. Lauby struck out nine for El Toro (14-9, 2-2). Dana Hills is 1-3 in league play.

San Clemente 1, Mission Viejo 0 (11 innings)--Amy Henderson doubled home the winning run in the top of the 11th. Tara Roush went the distance for San Clemente (8-8, 3-1), allowing six hits, striking out seven and walking four. Mission Viejo is 3-1 in league play.
