Ken Green, who lost last year’s event in a playoff, shot a final round 72 for a two-shot victory in the $1 million Greater Greensboro Open golf tournament Sunday at Greensboro, N.C.

Green, in scoring the fifth victory of his career, finished with a 72-hole total of 277, 11 under par. Before Sunday, his best performance this year was an 11th-place finish at the Masters. The victory was worth $180,000.

John Huston, playing in the same threesome with Green, finished second at 279 after a closing par 72. He earned $108,000.

Last year, Green was in position to win, but missed a three-foot putt and dropped into a tie with Sandy Lyle, who won a sudden-death playoff.

“It’s a situation where you think about coming back and getting revenge and beating . . . this course,” Green said. “I did it. Sometimes you don’t always do what you want. I came back and I beat it up and that’s the bottom line.”

Ed Fiori, who hasn’t won in seven years, shot a 67 for a 281 total and third place. Dave Eichelberger also bogeyed the 18th for a final-round 71 and 282 for fourth place.

Jim Booros, Greg Norman and Mike Sullivan were next at 283, with Norman turning in a 68 and Sullivan a 69. Booros bogeyed three of his last seven holes for a 72.

Dave Hill shot a 66 and Chi Chi Rodriguez had a 68 to lead the United States to a decisive victory over the International team and a second consecutive Seniors Chrysler Cup at Sarasota, Fla.

The four-day, 72-hole, individual stroke-play tournament was a fight for 100 total points, of which the United States took 71.

The United States held a 17-point lead over the Internationals going into the day and clinched the event after the first three matches--when Rodriguez defeated Bruce Crampton, 69-73, Al Geiberger defeated Harold Henning, 68-71, and Walter Zembriski defeated Doug Dalziel, 70-71.

Betsy King made a 12-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to defeat Lynn Adams and win the women’s USX tournament at Gulfport, Fla.

Adams, who entered the final round with a two-shot lead on defending champion Rosie Jones, needed an eight-footer to save par at No. 18 and match King at 13-under-par 275. Adams shot a 70 on Sunday; King of Limekiln, Pa., fired a 66 in winning.

The players returned to the 18th tee for the first playoff hole. Adams left her second shot 25 feet below the pin, while King’s shot landed eight feet away. Battling in her first playoff in 12 years, Adams left her birdie attempt a foot short before King dropped in her winning birdie putt, worth $37,500.

Lori Garbacz, who opened the tournament with a course-tying 64, shot a 69 to finish third at 277.
