Prep Baseball Roundup : Santa Ana Squeezes Past Foothill for 3-2 Victory

Jesse Rosas’ squeeze bunt in the top of the eighth inning gave Santa Ana High School a 3-2 victory over Foothill in a Century League baseball game Tuesday at Foothill.

The victory keeps the Saints (13-7 overall, 8-2 in league play) tied for first place with El Modena.

Rosas (4-3) went the distance for the victory.

Foothill (13-7, 7-3) led, 2-0, after five innings, but Julio Vargas tied the score with a two-run homer in the sixth, his second home run of the season.

Foothill had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh. With Scott Barton on first, Kent Donnelly doubled to right field. Barton tried to score, but right fielder Jerry Morales fired the ball to second baseman Phillip Flores, who relayed to Vargas in time to get Barton.

In other Century League games:

Villa Park 4, Santa Ana Valley 3--James Hong went two for three, including a two-run double to lead Villa Park at home. Scott Crosby hit a three-run home run in the top of the first inning to give Santa Ana Valley the lead, but Villa Park (10-10, 5-5) scored four in its half. After Hong doubled, Matt Genova hit an RBI double, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch. Reliever Kevin Ehl (4-0) earned the victory.

El Modena 8, Canyon 5--Cale Shepherd went two for three with a double and three RBIs to lead El Modena (10-7, 8-2) at home.

In the Academy League:

Cal Lutheran 20, St. Margaret’s 7--Mark Jorgensen had two hits and four RBIs and Chad Mott had two hits and three RBIs for Cal Lutheran (6-1, 4-1) at St. Margaret’s.

Liberty Christian 14, St. Michael’s 4--Todd Price had three hits and three RBIs and Chris Buckels had three hits, including a solo home run, and two RBIs for Liberty Christian (15-2, 5-0) at St. Michael’s. Liberty Christian scored eight runs in the third. Price had a two-run double and Brian James a two-run single in the inning.

In the Olympic League:

Santa Margarita 8, Valley Christian 4--Tim Markel went two for four with one RBI and Jeff Bradley had a single and two RBIs for the Eagles (7-9, 4-5). Pitcher Marc Mosman (2-1) had five strikeouts.

Whittier Christian 12, Capistrano Valley 3--Steve Little had four hits, two RBIs and scored two runs for Whittier Christian (12-5, 9-0) at Capistrano Valley Christian. Jon Caffrey had two-run homer for the Heralds. Kerry Langdale had two RBIs and Bret Biegert one for Capistrano Valley Christian (7-10, 2-7).

In the Sunset League:

Huntington Beach 9, Fountain Valley 8--Huntington Beach scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth, two on a double by Mark Little, to take a 9-6 lead and the Oilers hung on against first-place Fountain Valley (12-7, 7-3). Little had two hits and three RBIs for the Oilers. Ryan Marlin had three hits and an RBI for Huntington Beach (8-12, 4-6)

Ocean View 3, Marina 1--Randy Karliner (6-1) allowed two hits in five innings for the victory at Marina. Brent Woken pitched the final two innings for his second saved. The Seahawks (14-8, 6-4) scored two runs in the first as Jerry Christopherson had a RBI double and Cory Colbert a RBI single. Daniel Hernandez scored on an error in the sixth for Ocean View’s third run. Marina is 10-11 and 3-7.

Westminster 14, Edison 2--Brett Grebe had three hits and three RBIs and Chris Larson had two hits and three RBIs for Westminster (14-6-1, 6-4) at Edison. Grebe (6-2) allowed seven hits and struck out 12 for the victory. Edison is 7-10-2 and 4-6.
