All four eastbound lanes of California 94 were blocked for half an hour Wednesday morning after a chain-reaction accident involving two vehicles and an unloaded tanker truck, authorities said.

The accident, which occurred in a heavy rainstorm just after 6:30 a.m., is under investigation, said Alicia Contreras of the California Highway Patrol.

According to initial witness statements, the accident, which ended on 94 just west of Interstate 15, was triggered by a car in the slow lane cutting off another car in the second lane, Contreras said.

The car in the second lane braked and spun out of control into lane three and a pickup, she said.

The tanker truck, in the fast lane and preparing to exit to northbound Interstate 805, braked, collided with the car and pickup and jackknifed, blocking three of the freeway’s lanes, Contreras said. The pickup blocked the other lane, halting traffic.

Martin Monzon, 33, of Chula Vista and Banjerd Ukapapayasakul 47, of San Diego were taken to Mercy Hospital, where they were in fair condition.
