IN BRIEF : Pirates’ Van Slyke on Injured List
Pirates center fielder Andy Van Slyke went on the 21-day disabled list today to heal from a strained muscle in his right rib cage.
The move is retroactive to April 17, making May 8 the earliest he can return.
Van Slyke was a team leader last season, missing only six games. This year he has played in only nine of Pittsburgh’s 20 games and has only a .250 average and 2 RBIs to show for it. Van Slyke has yet to hit a home run this season.
He strained the muscle April 14 and aggravated the injury while swinging a bat Tuesday during practice.
