Aztec Women Win Big West Quarterfinal

San Diego State, ranked 16th in the NCAA, shut out Fresno State, 5-0, in the quarterfinals of the Big West Conference women’s tennis championships Thursday in Ojai.

Kristin Hill, ranked No. 66 in the nation, led SDSU by defeating the Bulldogs’ Jandrea Ouwendjik, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5).

The Aztecs advance to the semifinals today against No. 4-seeded UC Irvine, which defeated Pacific, 5-4. In the other semifinal, UC Santa Barbara (No. 2 seed) will play the University of Nevada Las Vegas (3). UCSB defeated Cal State Fullerton, 6-0, and UNLV beat Hawaii, 5-3.

MEN’S GOLF

U.S. International, with a 36-hole total of 586, leads a field of 10 teams in the Reno Spring Invitational at the Eagle Valley Golf Club in Carson City, Nev. The Gulls’ Paul McGinley (139) has a six-shot lead, and Craig Ballard (146) is third.

COLLEGE SIGNINGS

The University of San Diego women’s volleyball team announced the signing of four recruits: Heather Daley, a 5-foot-7 outside hitter and all-CIF Southern Section performer from Marymount High; Kristi Harris, a 5-6 setter from El Toro; Shannon Much, a 5-6 setter from Newbury Park and Maria Rickard, a 5-9 outside hitter from Santa Barbara High.

USD’s women’s tennis team announced the signing of Karen Laurer of Berkeley, the top-ranked player in Northern California girls’ 18s. The men’s tennis team has signed Kevin Bradley, the 1988 state champion from Las Vegas Valley High.

BASEBALL

Gary Fessia was two for four with a home run and three RBIs to lead UC San Diego over Cal Baptist, 8-4, in a nonconference game at Cal Baptist. Rick Rupkey (10-3) was the winner for the Tritons (22-15), ranked No. 8 in NCAA Division III.
