California Highway Patrol officers arrested a 33-year-old man Friday in connection with a hit-run accident on California 163 that killed a woman and critically injured her son.

Jose Arturo Reyes of Southeast San Diego was arrested at 1:15 p.m. in a stakeout at an undisclosed spot, Officer Alicia Contreras said. Officers had been given a license number and description of the man seen leaving the accident, which occurred about 11 a.m. Thursday.

Mary Jane Arrigoni, 68, of Eagar, Ariz., was pronounced dead at the scene. Her son, Joseph Arrigoni, 40, of San Diego, was taken to Mercy Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition Friday after undergoing surgery, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Arrigoni suffered injuries to his head and damage to his liver as well as cuts and bruises.

The two were northbound on 163, about a 10th of a mile south of Interstate 8, when they were struck from behind by a car that sped away.

Reyes is being held in County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run driving and felony manslaughter, a jail clerk said.
