A young man with a bullet in his head ran into the lobby of the Pomona Police Department Thursday night, telling officers he had been wounded in a drive-by shooting.

The victim, identified as Jose Marcos Vargas, was taken by officers to Pomona Valley Community Hospital. Officers said late Friday that he was expected to recover.

Vargas came running into the station’s lobby about 9:30 p.m., announcing to officers at the main desk that he had been shot in the head while he was in a car traveling on Park Avenue near Grand Street, Lt. Ernie Allsup said.

“There was a bullet in the back of his head and it looked like it followed the curve of his scalp,” Allsup said. “There’s a lump on the top of his head which I think is the bullet.”
