Stanford Wins, Gains Berth in Volleyball Final Four

Stanford defeated Hawaii in five sets Saturday night at Loyola Marymount to win the Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. regional qualifying tournament.

Scott Fortune had 33 kills for Stanford, which won by scores of 15-11, 8-15, 13-15, 15-12, 15-7.

The victory gave the Cardinal (24-5) a berth in the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. Final Four at UCLA next weekend. Penn State, Ball State and UCLA are the other qualifiers.

Stanford and UCLA tied for the WIVA championship, but Stanford lost a coin flip with the Bruins for the automatic berth, and had to win this tournament.

Hawaii finished at 22-7.
