Talented Insects Are Stars of Science Expo and Bookfair

Trained insects, back-yard chemistry projects and dozens of experiment-inspiring books take center stage as the Hacienda Heights Youth Science Center holds its second annual Science Expo and Bookfair today at Wedgeworth Elementary School, 16949 Wedgeworth Drive, Hacienda Heights. This is an expo, not a science fair with student-made projects. Local science groups will be on hand to talk about their specialties.

Entomologist Steve Kutcher, who has trained insects for movies (“Extremities,” “Fright Night,” “Spiderman”) will display live insects in their natural habitats. He also will show visitors how insects can be kept at home using household containers.

Jane Hoffman, author of the widely acclaimed “Backyard Scientist” books, will demonstrate several experiments from her books for 4- to 12-year-olds. Hoffman presents complex chemistry and physics theories through simple experiments, using materials commonly available at home.

Other exhibitors include the Los Angeles Rocketry Society, North Orange County Gem and Mineral Society and the Orange County Astronomy Society. Magic shows (with a scientific bent) are scheduled for 1 and 2:15 p.m., and a rocket launching for 1:45 p.m.
