U. S. Auto Club Midgets made their first of two appearances this season Saturday night at Saugus Speedway, and 3,602 spectators were treated to perhaps the most exciting race in the 6-week-old season.

Eighteen changes took place among the top four positions in the 30-lap main event before Rusty Rasmussen of Fresno finally claimed his first checkered flag of the season.

Rasmussen, who led from Laps 5 through 19 over the one-third mile oval, regained the lead on Lap 27 from P. J. Jones of Torrance and beat Robby Flock of City of Industry in a trophy dash to the finish.

In the 20-lap three-quarter Midget main event, Frank Deiny Jr. of Burbank, son of the former track champion, slid past Rob Hansen of Simi Valley on the final turn of Lap 11 and went on to win easily.
