Homer in 7th Gives BYU Sweep of Aztecs

Randy Wilstead hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Brigham Young a 5-4 victory over San Diego State and a sweep of the teams’ Western Athletic Conference doubleheader in Provo, Utah, Saturday.

Brigham Young won the first game, 2-1. The defeats dropped the Aztecs to 33-22, 14-8 in the WAC. BYU is 42-14 and 20-7.

The U.S. International swept a doubleheader from visiting Southern Utah, 7-3, 12-5. The Gulls (22-32) hit three home runs in the second game. Patrick Cheek hit a three-run homer in the fourth, Geoff Martinez a two-run homer in the sixth and Kevin Tahan a homer in the eighth. For the day, Cheek went six for 10 with five RBIs. Southern Utah dropped to 21-31.

MEN’S GOLF

SDSU, which led after one round, finished sixth with a three-round total of 891 at the WAC golf championships in Albuquerque, N.M.

New Mexico (857) and pre-tournament favorite Texas El Paso (860) finished first and second in a two-team chase over the final 18 holes. Wyoming (885) was 28 shots back in third, and Brigham Young (886) and Utah (890) also finished ahead of the Aztecs.

TENNIS

Bob Seymour of Del Mar advanced to today’s final of the men’s 65s in the Beach Club Seniors tournament at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. Seymour defeated Spencer Kern of San Francisco, 6-1, 6-1.

Fourth-seeded Liz Harper of La Jolla was defeated by second-seeded Vilma Gordan of Santa Barbara, 7-6, 2-6, 6-1, in the women’s 60s of the National Hardcourt Championships.

Westmont defeated Point Loma Nazarene 14-12 in the final day of the women’s NAIA District 3 championship tournament in Santa Barbara.

The Crusaders were tied with Westmont going into the last single-elimination round, but PLNC’s all-district selections Kim Wright and Shannon Anderson lost to Westmont’s Carolyn Clayton and Lelisa Wolters in doubles, 6-4, 6-3.

Westmont advanced to the NAIA national championship tournament May 22 in Kansas City, Mo.

Sixth-seeded Angelica Gavaldon of Coronado was defeated by Audra Keller of Memphis, Tenn., 6-3, 6-2, in the girls’ 18s final of the 14th annual Seventeen Magazine Tennis Tournament of Champions at Mission Viejo.

Gavaldon is a sophomore at Our Lady of Peace and two-time San Diego Section singles champion.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Candida Echeverria was named the University of San Diego’s most valuable player at the team’s awards banquet. Other winners included: Molly Hunter (defensive player), Rochelle Lightner (most improved) and Paula Mascari (hustle).

SOFTBALL

SDSU lost a Big West Conference doubleheader to 11th-ranked Cal Poly-Pomona in Pomona. The Aztecs lost the first game, 3-0, and the second, 5-0.
