Right fielder Jose Canseco of the Oakland Athletics believes he fractured a bone in his left hand and wrist Sunday on the second day of his rehabilitation assignment with the Huntsville Stars, the A’s double-A farm team.

Canseco, who was one for four with a walk on Saturday night, grounded out to second base in his first at-bat Sunday and then reinjured the hand and wrist when he singled in the third inning. He was clearly in pain as he ran to first on the run-scoring single.

“It’s painful,” Canseco said. “It’s a sharp pain. The movement is minimal at best.”

Canseco, most valuable player in the American League last season, will return to Oakland today and will have X-rays taken on Tuesday. He believes he will be out for at least another month.

“The next step is to have it operated on and have the bone taken out,” said Canseco, who began the season on the disabled list with a stress fracture of the hamate bone in his left wrist.

“I’ve never had that type of operation before. I think I’m looking at three to five weeks. I really couldn’t tell you.”

Canseco, who began taking batting practice a week ago after having a cast removed from the wrist and hand, said the injury began to bother him again the previous time up, when he grounded out.

“The first at-bat, he threw a fastball and it jammed me and I felt some pain,” Canseco said. “I decided to take another at-bat. The pain was tremendous. I feel as though it could be fractured.”

In his first at-bat Saturday, Jose Canseco struck out on a 3-2 pitch from Danilo Leon.
