Greg Mathews, St. Louis Cardinal left-hander, will undergo surgery on his pitching elbow later this week and will miss the remainder of the season.

The surgery will transfer ligaments from Mathews’ right wrist to his left elbow, Cardinal spokesman Kip Ingle said.

Mathews is the second Cardinal starter to be sidelined for the season. Danny Cox is out for the season after experiencing a sore arm during spring training and undergoing surgery.

“If it’s not one thing, it’s another,” Cardinal Manager Whitey Herzog said as the team headed back to St. Louis after a West Coast swing. “It’s a heck of way to end a trip.”
