Gunman Forces Evacuation of Hotel
A despondent man armed with a shotgun forced police to evacuate guests from a Holiday Inn in Los Angeles until he was talked into surrendering early Tuesday, authorities said.
A psychologist talked the man into giving himself up about 4:45 a.m. after a three-hour standoff with police on the seventh floor of the hotel, Sgt. Bob Tumas said.
The 25-year-old man, whose name was not released, had telephoned a suicide prevention hot line about 1:20 a.m. Tuesday, Tumas said. Hot line staff members notified police, who evacuated guests.
He was taken to County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where he was to be held for 72 hours of psychiatric observation.
