Sports Briefs : Carter Leaves 49ers Basketball Post

Butch Carter, an assistant coach for the Cal State Long Beach men’s basketball team, has accepted an assistant coaching job at the University of Dayton.

Carter, who spent one season with the 49ers, is an Indiana University graduate who played five years in the National Basketball Assn.

He will be an assistant to new Dayton Coach Jim O’Brien.

Pitcher Notches Her 37th No-Hitter

Lisa Fernandez of St. Joseph High School in Lakewood pitched her 37th career no-hitter--a CIF Southern Section record--Tuesday as the Jesters beat Rosary, 10-0, to clinch the Angelus League title.

It was the 11th no-hitter of the season for Fernandez, who struck out 19 batters.

She was the offensive star of the game, too, with five hits.

Strength Clinic Planned in Lakewood

The Southern California Strength and Speed Development Clinic for junior high and high schools will be held May 20 at Mayfair High School in Lakewood.

Weightlifting techniques, nutrition and speed and conditioning will be among the topics.

The speakers will include Jerry Simmons, strength coach for the New England Patriots; USC conditioning coaches Mike Clark, Bob Rodgers and Dan Johnson; Bob Alejo, UCLA strength coach, and Fernando Montes, trainer at Pasadena City College.

The fee is $18 if paid before Saturday.

2 Long Beach Lawn Bowlers Win

Two members of the Long Beach Lawn Bowling Club won recent tournaments.

Edna Schmidt won the Southwest Division singles at the Santa Anita Lawn Bowling Club in Arcadia, and Ann Kirchberg won the novice singles in an American Women Lawn Bowlers Assn. event at Riverside.

49ers Lose Rugby Final to Air Force

Cal State Long Beach lost to the host Air Force Academy, 25-7, in the title game of the National College Rugby Tournament in Colorado last weekend.

Tennis Playoff Teams Announced

Millikan (13-3), Wilson (15-4) and St. John Bosco (11-4) are 4-A teams in the Long Beach/Southeast area who will compete in the Southern Section tennis championships that start Tuesday.

Competing in 3-A will be Gahr (14-4) and Cerritos (11-4).

In 2-A are LaSerna (13-4), Whittier (11-6) and Montebello (12-3).

In 1-A are Bellflower (14-5), Valley Christian (12-5), Glenn (8-9), Whitney (17-2) and La Mirada (10-5.

Lakewood Leads Poll in 5A Division

Lakewood High School, which defeated Poly 7-4 Tuesday, is the No. 1-ranked team in the 5-A Division Southern Section sportswriters’ baseball poll. Spud O’Neil’s Lancers are 23-3 overall and 11-2 in the Moore League.
