A no-smoking policy will be imposed at all jails in Fresno County, effective June 10, Sheriff Steve Magarian announced. At the same time, instruction and counseling will be offered to help inmates quit smoking, he said. The sheriff said smoking will be banned because it is unhealthy and to reduce the chances of fires. “We really do hope that we get some letters down the road from some inmates that say, ‘You know, you really got me on the road to get off cigarettes,’ ” Magarian said.
