Trail Blazers Sign Adelman to One-Year Deal

The Portland Trail Blazers removed the interim designation from Coach Rick Adelman’s title Thursday, signing the 42-year-old former player to a one-year contract.

Adelman, who was in his sixth season as an assistant, took over as interim coach when Mike Schuler was fired in February. Schuler was the 1987 coach of the year in the National Basketball Assn.

Club President Harry Glickman said no other candidates were interviewed for the job and that the team retains an option to keep Adelman for a second year. Under Adelman the Trail Blazers were 14-21 during the regular season before losing to the Lakers in the first round of the playoffs.
