Oceanside Man Shot, Killed by Marshal

A 32-year-old Oceanside man was shot to death Friday during a struggle with three San Diego County marshals after they attempted to serve him with a mental health detention order, authorities said.

Kenneth Blacic was shot once in the upper body about 1:30 p.m. by a marshal after Blacic grabbed another marshal’s gun during the fight, and it discharged, said Lt. William Donnelly of the Oceanside Police Department.

No one was hit by the accidentally discharged bullet, Donnelly said.

Marshals had gone to Blacic’s home in the 1000 block of Tremont Street to take him to the County Mental Health hospital, Donnelly said. Blacic failed to voluntarily report to county health officers last week, Donnelly said.

The fatally wounded Blacic was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla by ambulance after he was combative and could not be airlifted by Life Flight helicopter, Donnelly said. Blacic died about 3:30 p.m.

Donnelly said the marshals looked as if they had been in a fight, though they were not treated for any injuries.

Their names are being withheld while the shooting is investigated, Donnelly said.
