IN BRIEF : Michael Jordan Named Player of Year
Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls has been named 1988-89 NBA Player of the Year by the Sporting News for the second straight year.
In voting by NBA players, Jordan won over Los Angeles guard Magic Johnson 84 to 37.
During the past season, Jordan earned his third consecutive scoring title, averaging 32.5 points per game. He also averaged eight rebounds and eight assists per game and made 234 steals.
Joining Jordan on the Sporting News’ NBA All-Star team are Utah’s Karl Malone, New York’s Patrick Ewing, Houston’s Akeem Olajuwon and Philadelphia’s Charles Barkley.
Golden State guard Mitch Richmond, with a 22-point average, 5.9 rebounds and 4.2 assists, was selected Rookie of the Year.
