A 19-year-old soldier who was pushing his disabled car on California 67 was killed when he was struck from behind by a car driven by a drunk driver, the California Highway Patrol reported Wednesday.

Daniel Blake Nesheim of Lakeside, who was on leave after completing training at Ft. Lee, Va., was pronounced dead at the scene about 11:40 p.m. Tuesday. Authorities said he was pushing his car south along the freeway just north of Interstate 8 when he was struck by a car driven by 22-year-old Shawn Meskimen of Alpine.

Meskimen was booked into County Jail on suspicion of felony drunk driving and involuntary manslaughter and was later released on $20,000 bail, a jail spokeswoman said.
