A Jeep became impaled on a guardrail Thursday on California 138 in the Antelope Valley, injuring two people, the California Highway Patrol reported.

At about 8 a.m., Gayle Swaim, 32, of Victorville, who was driving east in a truck, attempted to pass three other vehicles, crossed onto the shoulder to avoid an oncoming car and struck the guardrail end on, Highway Patrol Officer Scott McKnight said. The guardrail ran through Swaim’s Jeep from end to end and ripped loose. The Jeep landed in a creek bed, still impaled by the rail, McKnight said.

A passenger, Ronald Raymond Leatz, 47, of Victorville, was airlifted to Antelope Valley Hospital Medical Center, where he was in fair condition, hospital spokeswoman Frankie Richards said. Swaim was treated at the hospital for minor injuries and released, she said.
