KNBC Tops Emmy List; KCBS Wins Best News Program

KNBC-TV topped the winners’ list at the 41st annual Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards presented Saturday night by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Channel 4 picked up 13 awards, including six for its news department.

But the coveted Emmy for the best regularly scheduled daily news program went to KCBS-TV Channel 2, which won a total of nine awards, including five for its news department.

Channel 4 News feature “The Final Fix” won Emmys for best mini-documentary and best camera crew--news features. The station also won in the categories of spot news--breaking story (“Granada Hills Fire”), feature reporting (“Hang Gliding Dog”), news writers (“Ring of Fire,”) and film-tape editors--news features (“Seoul Man”).

Named top sports series was Channel 4’s “Sunday Night Sports,” and winning two awards was the station’s public affairs series, “Silver Linings.” Awards also went to Channel 4’s “Fred Roggin’s Sports Bowl ‘88,” “Sports Spotlight With Bret Lewis,” “Fight Back! With David Horowitz,” and the special, “Ring of Fire.”

In addition to the award for regularly scheduled daily news program, Channel 2 picked up Emmys for news reporting, sports reporting, camera crew--breaking news and news special. The station also won best children-youth special (“Clue You In: The Case of the Golden Sword”), children-youth series (“Kidquiz”), sports special (“Lakers--Lords of the Rings”) and host-moderator of a special (Valerie Colman, “Hands Untied”).

KABC-TV won six Emmys, including two for its series “Eye on L.A.” Also winning six awards--and the academy’s Governors Award for its 25th anniversary in local broadcasting--was public broadcaster KCET Channel 28. The station won two awards each for its programs “The Los Angeles History Project” and “KCET Journal.”
