Two Metro Rail construction workers were slightly injured Monday when part of a mammoth tunnel-digging machine collapsed as it was being dismantled, officials said.

The Fire Department dispatched rescue crews to the scene of the mishap below the 500 block of South Hill Street in Los Angeles about 3:30 p.m., Fire Department spokesman Jim Williamson said.

Southern California Rapid Transit District spokesman Greg Davy said the two men suffered bruises when a steel arm attached to the giant earth-digging machine toppled during the machine’s dismantling in the tunnel, 75 feet below the street.

“The injuries were very minor,” RTD spokesman Rick Jager said.

One worker suffered a bruised thigh and the other man suffered minor injuries to his hand, Davy said.

The two were brought out of the tunnel by fellow workers and taken to County-USC Medical Center for observation, Williamson said.
