Area Roundup : Jewish Hall of Fame Will Induct 5 Athletes on June 4 at Irvine

The American Friends of the Hebrew University will induct five athletes into the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame on June 4 at the Irvine Hilton.

World-class surfer Alisa Schwarzstein of Laguna Beach, former San Francisco 49er tight end John Frank, former California basketball player Larry Friend, former University of Pittsburgh running back Marshall Goldberg and former Olympic athlete Tamar Shumacher of Israel will be inducted at the 10th annual ceremony.

The seven finalists for the Jewish Young Leaders Sports Award also will be honored. Candidates are tennis player Steve Lappin (University High School), swimmer Jason Klugman (La Quinta), soccer and basketball player Mark Malo (Villa Park), tennis player Shana Meyerson (Woodbridge), water polo player Josh Speyer (Corona del Mar), cross-country and track and field athlete Toby Unger (Corona del Mar) and cross-country and track and field athlete Amanda Wheeland (Dana Hills).

The International Ambassadors will face Daiei, a club team from Japan, in the second Flo Hyman volleyball match at UC Irvine’s Bren Center Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

The International Ambassadors, the team that the late Hyman played for, is a collection of former U.S. Olympic team members and current collegiate players. The proceeds from the match will benefit the Flo Hyman Memorial Fund.

Some of the top juniors (ages 7-16) on the West Coast will compete in the first Orange County Buddhist Church Judo Club judo championships Sunday at Savanna High School.

The tournament, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., is sponsored by United States Judo Inc. and features approximately 40 divisions for males and female competitors of varying expertise ages 7 to adult. There will be a novice division.
