UCSD’s Quigley Wins Shotput on Final Throw

Shannon Quigley of UCSD came through on her sixth and final throw with a personal best 45-feet-2 1/4 to win the women’s shotput at the NCAA Division III track and field championships at Naperville, Ill.

Quigley thus became the first UCSD woman to win an individual national title in track and field.

The UCSD women had one other high finisher in Andrea Kouremetis, who placed fourth in the 200 meters at 25.33. Denise Stockwell of Dickinson won in 24.54.

By finishing among the top eight in their events, Quigley and Kouremetis attained All-American status.

Also gaining All-American recognition for UCSD was hammer thrower Scott Sargent, whose 183-2 1/2 was good for fourth in the men’s competition.

Quigley’s first-place finish and Kouremetis’ fourth supplied the UCSD women with 15 team points, putting the Tritons in seventh place.

Two Point Loma Nazarene athletes earned All-American honors with fifth-place finishes at the NAIA national track and field championships at Azusa Pacific.

Christian Andresson finished fifth in the men’s triple jump with a leap of 49-feet-5, behind the winning effort of Oklahoma Baptist’s Solomon Okundaye (50-10.) Connie Navarro was fifth with 4,654 points in the heptathlon, won by Melanie Byrne of Southern Oregon State with 5,132. Navarro had the longest javelin throw of the competition, 39.64 meters.

Annette Ronnerman advanced to today’s finals in the women’s 800 with a 2:13.46, sixth-fastest among the qualifiers. PLNC’s other finalist today is national leader Dan Raatjes in the high jump.

The PLNC men have 15 points after two days of the three-day meet, behind Azusa Pacific’s leading 71 points. The women have 5.5 points; Prairie View A&M; leads with 39.

TENNIS

USD’s Jose Luis Noriega, ranked 24th in the nation, suffered only his second singles match of the season, but it eliminated him in the round of 16 at the NCAA individual tournament in Athens, Ga.

Noriega lost to UC Irvine’s Trevor Kronemann, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1. Kronemann is ranked No. 16. Noriega finished 16-2.

MEN’S GOLF

U.S. International’s Paul McGinley shot a 5-under-par 66 in the second round of the NCAA Division I West Regional in El Paso, Tex.

Combined with his first-round 75, McGinley is tied for 13th at 141. The leaders are at 136.

At the NCAA Division III nationals, UCSD’s Devin Thomas came back from the tournament’s low-round Thursday (70) with a 93 in heavy winds at Penora, Iowa.

The 11th hole killed Thomas, who entered the round in second place. He took a 15. Thomas, who needed a 74 to win the tournament, did not finish among leaders. John McCullough of Methodist shot a final 70 to win with a four-round total of 295.

Cal State Stanislaus took the team title with a four-round total of 1,202. Methodist was second at 1,210. UCSD dropped from eighth to 16th with a final-round 343 to finish at 1,272.

WOMEN’S GOLF

Allison Shapcott of USIU shot a 74 for a three-round total of 224 and is tied for eighth after three rounds of the NCAA championships at Stanford.

Shapcott is nine behind leader Pat Hurst of San Jose State. Christy Erb, a USDHS graduate now at UCLA, shot a third-round 76 for a total of 232 and is tied for 35th.
