Fourth- through sixth-graders from throughout Los Angeles County will get anti-drug messages from innovative rappers De La Soul, teen-dream group New Kids on the Block, pop/funk group Z’Looke and rapper Def Jef during a Drug Awareness Rally at the Sports Arena Monday. The County Parks and Recreation Department-sponsored event also will feature appearances by TV stars Sinbad (“A Different World”), Christina Applegate (“Married With Children”), Thora (“Day by Day”) and Soleil Moon Frye (“Punky Brewster”). The students will be bused to the rally, which is not open to the public. Radio personality Jay Thomas will emcee.
“Volume One (Traveling Wilburys)” won album of the year honors and Guns N’ Roses took the award for artist of the year at the first International Rock Awards telecast Wednesday on ABC. Other winners included the band Living Colour (newcomer of the year), Elvis Costello (songwriter of the year) and Amnesty International (tour of the year). Keith Richards received an honorary Living Legend Award, prompting him to remark: “The legend bit’s easy, the living’s hard.”
