Cars Collide on Laguna Canyon Road
Two drivers were in serious condition Saturday after a head-on collision on Laguna Canyon Road in Irvine, authorities said.
According to police, a Suburu GL driven by Kimberlie R. Padilla, 18, of Laguna Niguel was heading north toward the San Diego Freeway at 1:51 a.m. when it crossed over into the southbound lanes and was struck by a Pontiac TransAm driven by Randy N. Mallough, 36, of Laguna Beach.
Mallough put on the brakes but was unable to avoid Padilla, said Sgt. Mike Ogden of the Irvine Police Department.
Padilla and Mallough were taken to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo, where authorities arrested both of them on suspicion of drunk driving.
They were released pending a review of the case by the district attorney’s office, Ogden said. They remain in the hospital’s intensive care unit. As a result of the accident, Laguna Canyon Road was closed to traffic until 6 a.m.
