Orange : Old Town Steering Panel Honored by Governor
The city’s Old Town Steering Committee has been selected as a recipient of a historic preservation award from Gov. George Deukmejian.
The steering committee was formed 10 years ago to help develop plans to preserve and revitalize the city’s district, including its famed historic circle at Chapman Avenue and Glassell Street.
The panel’s achievements include placement of the plaza and downtown area on the National Register of Historic Places, installation of old-style lighting and major street improvements. The governor’s selection was made during last month’s National Historic Preservation Week, when Deukmejian recognized six organizations whose preservation projects and activities demonstrated “excellence and outstanding dedication” toward historic preservation.
The committee members include its chairman, Orange Mayor Don E. Smith, and David Hart, Carroll Johnson, Charles Miles, Corinne Schreck, Don Caskey, Russell Barrios, Fred Krebs, Jim Miller, Gus Theissen, Alice Clark, Dale H. Rahn, Margo Andrews, Kenneth Claypool, John Kaiser, Gloria Boice, Ron Thompson, Bert Yamasaki, Edward Gala, Helmut Stolpp, Gary Johnson and Bernie Dennis.
