Irvine : Truck Crash Causes Morning Freeway Jam
- Share via
A truck driver fell asleep and crashed into a guardrail on the Santa Ana Freeway near Sand Canyon Avenue, resulting in the closure of all northbound lanes during the early morning rush hour Tuesday.
The 6:30 a.m. accident caused a traffic delay of several hours while emergency crews cleared the wreckage and about 90 gallons of diesel fuel that spilled on the roadway, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Roy Holliday, 38, of Ontario told officers that he was returning to Santa Fe Springs from San Diego when he fell asleep.
Holliday was not injured although the truck’s cab was left hanging over a steep embankment.
Sand Canyon Avenue was also closed until 11 a.m. while Caltrans crews replaced the guardrail.
