NATION : Eastern Airlines Shuttle Is No More
BOSTON — The Eastern Airlines shuttle, launched in 1961 with just 20 passengers on the first two flights, faded into aviation history today after carrying 76 million people along the Washington-New York-Boston corridor.
“We feel a little sadness. It’s sort of the end of an era,” said Rose Orlinsky of New York, who flew the shuttle on its last day to attend her grandson’s graduation at Harvard University.
The shuttle, which resumed service after the March 4 strike that led Eastern Airlines into bankruptcy, was sold for $365 million to New York developer Donald Trump, who will initiate his new Trump Shuttle on Thursday.
