College World Series : Wichita State Wins on Wedge Shot, 8-4
OMAHA — Eric Wedge hit a three-run homer and Greg Brummett got his second pitching victory of the College World Series as fourth-seeded Wichita State eliminated fifth-seeded Arkansas, 8-4, Tuesday night.
The Shockers (65-16) advance to play against unbeaten and top-seeded Florida State (54-16) tonight. The Seminoles downed Wichita State, 4-2, Sunday.
Arkansas (51-16) lost twice in the tournament to Wichita State and Brummett (17-2). The Shockers downed the Razorbacks, 3-1, in the opening round last Friday. Brummett allowed four hits in 7 1/3 innings in that game.
This time, Wedge gave Brummett a 3-0 lead in the first inning after Arkansas starter Doug Bennett (7-3) experienced control problems and walked Jim Audley to lead off the game and, one out later, walked Mike McDonald.
Wedge hit a 3-and-1 pitch over the 370-foot sign in left-center field for his 23rd homer.
Arkansas reached Brummett for a run in fifth when Haden Etheridge doubled with one out and Tony Gilmore singled him to third. Pinch-hitter Jay Carpenter grounded into a force out at second and Etheridge scored.
