Shirley Maxwell; Retired LAPD Sergeant
Shirley Maxwell, 68, a retired Los Angeles Police Department sergeant who was one of the first women to attain that rank. She also was the first policewoman to receive an award from the Christians and Jews for Law and Morality. Mrs. Maxwell, who was married to an LAPD detective, worked primarily on juvenile cases during her 26 years with the department. Her basic assignments were in the West Los Angeles area. She retired in 1969. In Inglewood on June 2 of cancer.
