U.S. Gets 95-92 Win Over Cuba
Doug Smith scored with 1:01 remaining, then grabbed three rebounds in the final minute as the United States edged Cuba, 95-92, Saturday at Mexico City in a qualifying tournament for the World Basketball Championships.
Eduardo Cabrera missed two open shots under the basket in the final minute as Cuba failed to score in the last two minutes.
The U.S. has a 2-1 record and can reach the final round with a win over Panama today.
“We were very lucky to win because Cuba played a great game,” U.S. Coach Bobby Cremins said. “It was a hard-fought game, and I believe we won by luck and the Cuban errors with the ball in the last minutes.”
Rodney Monroe scored 16 points for the United States, Lionel Simmons added 15 and Smith had 14.
