Golf Roundup : J.C. Snead Joins Mast, Grady as the Leaders in Westchester

J.C. Snead shot a one-under-par 70 Saturday and moved into a three-way tie for the lead with Dick Mast and Australian Wayne Grady in the third round of the Westchester golf tournament at Harrison, N.Y.

Mast, who has yet to win in nine seasons on the PGA Tour, and Grady, not yet a winner in the United States, each shot a 71 on the soggy course to share the lead with Snead, 48, at 205.

Scott Hoch, who shot a 67, and Mark Lye, who had a 71, were next at 207.

Orville Moody pulled away from the field with a course-record 64, taking a six-shot lead after three rounds of the Senior Tournament Players Championship at Ponte Vedra, Fla.

The 1969 U.S. Open winner had eight birdies and no bogeys on the par-72, 6,646-yard TPC at Sawgrass Valley course for a total of 200, a tournament record.

Charles Coody, who shot a 66, and Lou Graham, who had a 67, were tied with second-round leader Gary Player for second place at 206. Player shot a 72.

Debbie Massey’s 13 points held up through a challenge by hometown favorite Nina Foust, and she held on for a one-point victory in the third round of the $400,000 Pat Bradley tournament at High Point, N.C.

The top 36 scorers advanced to today’s final round. The 36 players who went home each received $1,000.

Oklahoma, ending a string of frustrating NCAA finishes, played a solid final round to win their first team title at Edmond, Okla.

Led by Doug Martin, who shot a 67 in the final round, the Sooners finished with a total score of 1,139, 19 over par on the Oak Country Tree Club East Course and 19 shots ahead of runner-up Texas.

Freshman Phil Mickelson of Arizona State won medalist honors by four strokes with a one-over-par 281.

The 36-hole final day was necessitated by the washout of the opening round Wednesday.
