Jimmy Connors and Vitas Gerulaitis provided a glimpse of yesteryear Thursday in the quarterfinals of a grass-court tournament at Edinburgh, Scotland.

Connors, 36, beat his old friend and doubles partner, 6-2, 7-5.

“It was always enjoyable to play Jimmy,” said Gerulaitis, 34. “We always had real dogfights. It was always close. I can’t remember an easy victory for either of us.”

They agreed that their most memorable match was in the 1980 French Open semifinals, Gerulaitis winning, 6-4, in the fifth set.
