Three students from Saddleback Unified School District took first place this week in the National History Day contest at the University of Maryland, school officials said.

The team had prepared a project on Jane Addams, the founder of Chicago’s Hull House and winner of the 1931 Nobel Peace Prize for her part in such actions as enactment of child labor laws.

The winners were Kate Staiger and Laurel Gorman, seventh-grade students at La Paz Intermediate School, and Peter Marietta, an eighth-grader at Los Alisos Intermediate School, according to teacher Michael O’Neill, who coordinated the school district’s History Day entries.

O’Neill said there were 300,000 contestants nationwide and 1,800 finalists. The only finalists from Southern California were the three Saddleback Unified intermediate school students and Seth Gorman, a student at Mission Viejo High School, also in the Saddleback district, who placed second in the high school category.
