A sheriff’s deputy shot and wounded a suspected auto thief as he appeared to reach for a weapon at the end of a brief car chase Saturday, deputies said.

Henry Williams, 20, was struck in the buttocks by shots fired by the deputy, who opened fire when Williams reached toward his pants waistband as he ran away, Deputy George Ducoulombier said.

Williams was listed in good condition at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center after the shooting about 1:30 a.m.
