Sockers’ Wright Taken in Draft
Paul Wright, a 19-year-old forward for the Sockers, has been selected by the Cleveland Crunch in the Major Indoor Soccer League expansion draft.
Wright, who scored 11 points in 30 games during the regular season, was the only Socker chosen.
Wright, the 17th overall pick in the second round of the 1987 MISL draft, played at Grossmont High School where he was an All-San Diego Section pick two consecutive seasons.
Cleveland selected six other players, including former Socker defender Fernando Clavijo, who played for the Los Angeles Lazers last season.
CYCLING
Tom Broznowski of San Diego finished 14th in the $110,000 CoreStates U.S. Pro Cycling Championship in Philadelphia, the nation’s richest single-day cycling event.
Broznowski completed the 156-mile race in 6 hours 25 minutes 47 seconds, 2:08 behind winner Greg Oravetz of Huntington Beach.
BOWLING
Jess Stayrook of San Diego is in eighth place with 1,321 pins after the first round of the Professional Bowlers Assn.’s $130,000 Kessler Open in Dublin, Calif. Roseville’s Steve Cook, who bowled a 300 in his final game, leads with 1,437 pins.
