Pigg, Tinley Finish 1-2 in Triathlon

Mike Pigg led an American sweep of the top two places in the men’s competition Sunday while compatriot Erin Baker took the women’s title in the Japan Triathlon Series Nippondaira.

Pigg, the 1987-88 U.S. champion, swam .93 miles in 20 minutes 11 seconds, bicycled 24.8 miles in 52:52 seconds, and ran 6.2 miles in 34 minutes for a total time of 1 hour 48 minutes 34 seconds, including transit time, to win the men’s race.

Scott Tinley finished second with a total time of 1:51:43, followed by Ronnie Hansen of Denmark in 1:53:13.

Baker’s winning time was 2:01:14, followed by Canadian Julia Deck in 2:02:50. The third-place finisher was Kirsten Hansen in 2:06:26.
