THE SIDELINES : Swiss Wins 112-Mile Cycle Race

Kurt Steinmann of Switzerland won the 112-mile leg of the Tour of Switzerland road cycling race today, while countryman Beat Breu retained the yellow jersey of the overall leader.

Joined by Fabio Roscioli, Steinmann dashed ahead after 12 miles and built a margin of more than 16 minutes before the field began to chase him. With Roscioli dropping back, the Swiss managed to hold onto his lead on the uphill windup section leading to this Alpine resort, 10,812 feet high.

He finished in 5 hours, 33 minutes, 31 seconds for an average of 22.7 m.p.h. Spain’s Miguel Indurain was second and Breu, a climbing specialist, third, both 40 seconds behind.

Breu’s margin in the overall standings remained unchanged, with fellow Swiss riders Daniel Steiger and Joerg Mueller trailing him by 30 and 49 seconds, respectively.
