Wachs Calls for Ban on Sale of Veal
Los Angeles Councilman Joel Wachs, in an effort to curtail the “inhumane” treatment of milk-fed calves, Tuesday called for a ban on the sale of veal products.
Wachs introduced a motion to the City Council that would prohibit the raising of veal calves that are denied access to “a wholesome and nutritious diet” by being locked in crates before they are slaughtered.
The motion also calls for a ban on the sale of products from veal calves that are raised in such a manner. A similar law has passed the state Senate and is being considered by the Assembly. A bill addressing the issue also has been introduced in Congress.
