New AIDS Cases Set Record in May
There were 244 confirmed cases of AIDS in Los Angeles County in May, health authorities reported Tuesday. It was the highest monthly count since the county began keeping statistics five years ago, but no immediate reason was given for the figure.
The monthly figure is up sharply from the 192 cases reported in April and tops the previous monthly high of 229 cases reported in March. Of the 244 new cases, six involved children. Another 210 cases were still pending investigation.
As of May, there were 7,173 confirmed AIDS cases in the county, including 66 that involve children. The death rate is at 65%, accounting for 4,651 deaths through the end of May.
