An elderly man shot his estranged wife to death today as she played poker with friends in a Los Angeles May Co. department store restaurant full of older women, then turned the gun on himself, police said.
The wife, shot several times in the chest, died on the way to a hospital; the man died instantly of a head wound, said Lt. Richard Iddings. No one else was injured.
The 10:15 a.m. shooting shocked diners and 30 to 50 elderly women who regularly gather for card games in the fifth-floor restaurant at the store, which is at the corner of Wilshire and Fairfax in the mid-Wilshire district.
“They’re still upset,” Iddings said.
“It’s a murder-suicide, the husband shot his wife and then himself,” said Detective Frank Boland, another investigator at the scene.
