San Pedro artist Michael Davis is the winner of a sculpture competition sponsored by FHP Health Care. He will be building an 18-foot work in steel, aluminum, bronze and gold leaf for the health maintenance organization’s corporate office in Fountain Valley. The contest, which attracted 65 entrants, was open to any artist who worked or lived in Orange County in 1965-88. The judges were Dextra Frankel, director of the Cal State Fullerton Art Gallery; Kathy Bryant, managing editor of Orange County Magazine; Cynthia MacMullin, director of FHP Hippodrome Gallery in Long Beach, and Dr. Robert Gumbiner, founder of FHP.

Davis, whose commissions include a permanent work embedded in the facade of the Laguna Art Museum, will receive $35,000 to design, fabricate and install the sculpture, which will embody the theme “Science and Mankind.”
