Clever Trevor had the bloodlines and the burst to go wire-to-wire and win the $300,000 St. Paul Derby by seven lengths over Tricky Creek at Canterbury Downs in Shakopee, Minn.
The grandson of 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew, Clever Trevor took the lead immediately and never relinquished it, finishing in 1:48 to equal the track record for 1 1/8 miles.
Ridden by Don Pettinger and trained by Donnie Von Hemel, Clever Trevor paid $9.80, $5.20 and $3.20. The brown gelding, who finished 13th in the Kentucky Derby, won $180,000 to boost his career earnings to $598,317.
Music Merci was third, and Western Playboy, one of the Triple Crown favorites before suffering a leg injury, went off at 2-1 but finished fourth.
