Woman Shot in Leg While on 2nd Tee at Costa Mesa Golf Club
A Santa Ana Heights woman was shot through her left leg Tuesday as she stood on the second tee of the Costa Mesa Golf and Country Club.
Suzanne Bannan, 29, told police that she heard what sounded like a gunshot from the western side of the golf course near Placentia Avenue and Estancia High School. A vacant field separates the golf course and Placentia Avenue, a distance of about 500 yards, said Costa Mesa Police Lt. Gary Webster.
There are no suspects or apparent motives in the shooting, Webster said.
“There are a lot of squirrels and other rodents in the field. Maybe someone was out testing their aim,” Webster said. “If that’s the case, they obviously missed.”
Bannan was about to hit her tee shot on the par five, 525-yard second hole when she was wounded. She was taken to College Hospital Costa Mesa where she was treated and released. The .22-caliber bullet struck her left leg just above the knee.
