Baldwin Park : Authority to Fire Granted

Share

As part of a continuing effort to reorganize the City Hall staff, the City Council has voted 4 to 0 to approve an ordinance giving it authority to dismiss city department heads.

But Mayor Leo King said that despite last week’s vote, the council has no plans to dismiss any of the city’s seven department heads.

“We’re not power-hungry people,” King said Wednesday. He said the council approved the ordinance to make it easier for members to get information from department heads. Previously, a city manager could order his staff not to talk directly to council members or give them information, King said.

“He was the only person who could hire and fire,” King said. The ordinance goes into effect July 21, City Clerk Linda Gair said.
