Tanker Spills 1,500 Gallons of Crude Oil

An Arco tanker berthed in the Port of Long Beach spilled about 1,500 gallons of Alaskan crude oil before the leak was halted, authorities said.

The spill was still being investigated Wednesday, but may have been caused by a ruptured line on the tanker’s upper deck, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Elizabeth Neely.

“This is considered a minor spill,” Neely said. She said reporting standards classify a medium spill as involving more than 10,000 gallons.

Environmental response personnel from the Coast Guard Marine Safety office in Long Beach were sent to assess the spill when it occurred Tuesday and assure that it was cleaned up. Neely said Arco brought in the Clean Coastal Water and Chem Pro companies to contain the spill.
